Schools and COVID

  • Definition of critical workers has expanded significantly since lockdown 1
  • In primary schools a teacher cannot teach in class and remotely at the same time
  • Schools will not open before the end of Half Term
  • Lateral flow tests are not very reliable. Efficacy depends on the trading the operator has received. Just secondary schools using it. Reasonably simple to use. PCR test is more accurate however.
  • If one child tests positive, the whole bubble has to go home. The difficulty is only sending children home who are at risk of spreading the virus.
  • Saliva tests are easy to complete. Hamble school and Fernhill school are part of a pilot. Children spit into a pot first thing in the morning and bring it to school where they are collected by a member of Southampton University Hospital.
  • Remote learning struggles on some topics
  • Face masks are being used when moving about the school
  • All Special Schools have remained open throughout
  • More laptops are being made available to Year 3 upwards
  • Critical workers list has been vastly expanded
  • Every child (who is entitled) can access free school meals while they are learning from home. Food hampers are delivered weekly by HC3S. Government have introduced a national voucher scheme.
  • Parents being fined for children’s non-attendance; if parents are worried, the best thing is reassurance by head teachers talking through risk assessments, especially where a parent may be extremely vulnerable.  Head teachers issue fines, not the County Council.
